Search within the subject

How it works

subject: followed by a word searches for that word in the subject only, not in the body of the message.

Examples

• subject:dinnerOpen in Gmail ↗

  Messages whose subject contains "dinner".

• subject:(dinner movie)Open in Gmail ↗

Messages whose subject contains both words.

What it does well

• Rules out messages that mention the word only in the body.
• With parentheses, targets several words in the subject in one go.

What it does badly

• The help page also shows subject:anniversary party without saying what "party" applies to. To make several words all apply to the subject, the form it presents with parentheses is subject:(dinner movie). Not documented by Google · Gmail Help: search operators
